1 Doctoral Student (m/f/d)

The German Institute of Human Nutrition, Potsdam-Rehbrücke is a member of the Leibniz Association. The institute’s mission is to conduct experimental and clinical research in the field of nutrition and health, with the aim of understanding the molecular basis of nutrition-dependent diseases, and of developing new strategies for treatment and prevention (Website: http://www.dife.de/?lang=en).

We invite applications for the newly founded Junior Research Group Muscle Physiology and Metabolism (MPM) for

1 Doctoral Student (m/f/d)

starting on 01.01.2021.

Your mission

The PhD candidate will investigate a novel exercise-responsive signaling enzyme, which we identified using proteomic analyses in human and mouse skeletal muscle. This enzyme is highly expressed in skeletal muscle, regulated by different types of exercises in humans, and, intriguingly its overexpression is sufficient to increase muscle glucose uptake. We have generated muscle-specific knockout mice to investigate what this enzyme signals to and whether it is necessary for muscle glucose uptake during insulin-stimulation, exercise and muscle contractions both in vivo and ex vivo. In addition, we want to understand the role of this enzyme in insulin resistance, exercise training and the loss of skeletal muscle mass/strength that typically occur with aging. Under this umbrella, the PhD candidate will:

  • Breed, maintain and genotype genetically modified mouse lines
  • Assess molecular signaling pathways using molecular biological techniques, including phosphoproteomics
  • Use the isolated incubated muscle technique to investigate in vitro contraction-stimulated muscle signaling and metabolism
  • Conduct in vivo mouse experiments to assess glucose metabolism in response to insulin stimulation, acute exercise and chronic exercise training

Your Skills and Requirements

  • Excellent M.Sc. (or equivalent) in Life Science, Biology, Nutritional Science, Medicine
  • Experience in animal intervention studies within the area of metabolism, FELASA certificate (or equivalent) would be desirable
  • Strong laboratory-based skills related to metabolism, biochemistry and molecular biology
  • Experience with data analysis and presentation
  • High degree of motivation and ability to work in an interactive research environment
  • Excellent English (spoken and in writing) and data analysis and presentation abilities (MS Office, statistics)
  • Curious mindset with a good literature knowledge in metabolism and physiology
  • Previous (co-)authorship in peer-reviewed publications is beneficial

Our Offer

  • A vibrant and interactive research environment, state-of-the-art equipment and qualified training and enrolment in a local PhD program
  • Innovative research focused on understanding human metabolic complications
  • Working in a vibrating and scientifically stimulating environment with excellent facilities for metabolic and nutrition research
  • Excellent academic networking opportunities (nationally and internationally)
  • Support in developing management and grant writing skills

The advertised position is available initially for 3 years. The position will be paid according to the terms of the civil service collective bargaining act (TV-L 65 % of level E13).
