The Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy as a nationally and internationally acting institute is researching at the interface of biological and technical systems. Our research is aimed at sustainable intensification. We analyze, model and evaluate bio-economic production systems. We develop and integrate new technologies and management strategies for a knowledge-based, site-specific production of biomass, and its use for food, as biobased materials and fuels - from basic research to application.
Thus we are contributing to food security, animal welfare, the holistic use of biomass, and to protect the climate and environment.
For our research area of complex, multifunctional and individualised "livestock-environment-interactions” integrating the ONE HEALTH approach we are seeking a

Postdoc (m/f/d)

in the field of
Animal individual modelling and management of livestock-environment-interactions
starting in January 2020

Our research aims at the sustainable intensification of livestock husbandry systems by optimising housing environment for human, animal and environmental health including the individual recognition of animal resiliences against stress and diseases. We develop basics for modelling and management of livestock-environment-interactions for pig and dairy housing systems. For this purpose we integrate existing fields of research: Animal welfare, housing systems, barn climate and emissions (incl. spread of antimicrobial resistances and infectious diseases) and use methods of animal monitoring, emission measurements and data science.

Your responsibilities

  • Development of mechanistic models to describe the interaction between events of stress and disease and individual animal-related adaptation reactions
  • Development of predictive models for individual animal resilience to disease and stress
  • Concepts for modelling and management of livestock-environment interactions
  • Model development and establishment, specifically:
  • Sensor data processing and –analysis, statistical analysis, machine learning and research data management
  • Scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Conception and management of interdisciplinary basic and applied research projects

Our expectations

  • thematically relevant and very good doctorate in the field of natural sciences or related engineering disciplines
  • several years of Research experience and knowledge in sensor based health and welfare management in livestock, emissions, spread of antimicrobial resistances and infectious diseases, evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals, acquisition of third-party funding and project leadership
  • Very good knowledge of statistical data analysis
  • excellent English skills, both written and spoken
  • Independent, self-responsible, reliable and result-oriented way of working
  • Ability to analyse complex data and situations
  • Team spirit, ability to cooperate, flexibility, commitment, ability to work under pressure, intercultural competence
  • Willingness to travel

We offer

  • Excellent infrastructure for carrying out scientific work
  • Attractive, interdisciplinary working environment and very good conditions to develop your own scientific career (e.g. habilitation) and your network
  • Possibility to raise third-party funds and build up a junior research group
  • Family-friendly working conditions that foster the compatibility of work and family life
