Humboldt Research Award for Visiting Researcher Dietmar W. Hutmacher

Dietmar W. Hutmacher, distinguished professor at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane has been awarded one of the prestigious Humboldt Research Awards, which comes with € 60,000. The prize recognizes his pioneering and outstanding work in the fields of biomaterials, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Furthermore this will allows him to strengthen and deepen his relationships with the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (MPICI) in Potsdam.

Dietmar W. Hutmacher is Professor and Chair of Regenerative Medicine at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI), Queensland University of Technology. He is the Director of the Centre in Regenerative Medicine and the ARC Centre in Additive Biomanufacturing. Both centers are built by a multidisciplinary team of researchers including engineers, cell biologists, polymer chemists, clinicians, veterinarians and surgeons. Hutmacher originally trained as an engineer is one of very few academics in the field of biomaterials/tissue engineering to have taken a research program from fundamental research through to clinical application utilizing research in-vitro, in-vivo, preclinical models and clinical trials.

Over the last two decades he has gained a worldwide reputation in the field of biomaterials as well as tissue engineering & regenerative medicine, and his track record illustrates successful mastery of a major challenge in an interdisciplinary field: the ability to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, and initiate and nurture research and educational programs across different disciplines. He has gained a thorough understanding of the status of the biomedical engineering field, and a clear vision of the needs for the 21st century for this exciting and rapidly evolving multidisciplinary research field.

The Biomaterials Department of Peter Fratzl has already collaborated with Dietmar W. Hutmacher over the last 6 years in the area of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The award will enable visits to the Max Planck Institute in Potsdam, in order to deepen and renew this successful research collaboration.

Humboldt Research Award
The award is granted in recognition of a researcher's entire achievements to date to academics whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in the future.
